Bubbles
While learning about scientific tools and how to conduct a scientific study the students mixed a bubble solution. They got to use straws to blow into the solution to create the bubbles and then used a magnifying glass to observe what they saw. One step included adding glycerin to the mixture and recording the changes that were observed. Schoolyard Habitat Students are working in small groups to research animal habitats. Each group has a specific animal habitat to study. As a group they will make a poster to hang in the hallway and make a habitat project to place on school campus. Projects include bird feeders, bird houses, toad abodes, butterfly feeders, etc. Individually the students will sketch an animal habitat from our school campus. We will take a field trip to the Crowley's Ridge Nature Center to expand our knowledge on habitats. UPDATE: Students have completed their research projects. They have given group presentations to the class and placed various items in animal habitats on the school campus. They will be checking them regularly to see if animals are using the items. |
Nature Center Field Trip As part of out animal habitat project we took a field trip to the Crowley's Ridge Nature Center in Jonesboro. The kids watched a video on the creation of Crowley's Ridge, got to pet an owl, heard about the butterfly and native plant gardens from a member of Mater Gardeners, tried muscadines, had a picnic lunch and took a nature walk to look for animals in their natural habitat. Miss Northeast Arkansas Outstanding Teen Izzy Baughn visited the 3rd and 4th graders to discuss weather preparedness. She talked to the kids, gave them coloring pages and even played a little Simon Says.....weather style. |
Natural Disasters We did a unit on natural disasters. The students researched different types of natural disasters and created presentations about them. The created supplies kits, went on a trip to KAIT to see how the weather is reported (had lunch at Dairy Queen), created natural disasters of their own (volcanoes and tornadoes in bottles) and practiced emergency drills at home and school. |
